The History

Nebula ZX Spectrum cover

Nebula is a game of galactic conflict played in turn mode. Players take the role as leader of one of the six races that desire expansion themselves and conquer the rest of the galaxy. Random events such plagues create problems each race leader must deal. The game is subtitled on the cover "A game of galactic strategy". For this game Julian Gollop gathered inspiration from an SPI board game called The Sword and the Stars.

This is Julian's first published game for Spectrum and also the first coded by himself. He started learning coding in his Sinclair ZX81 and migrating to a ZX Spectrum 48K give him the chance to have a proper microcomputer with memory to do a game like Nebula. However as first steps in Spectrum coding universe Nebula it's a rudimentar only ZX Basic code game. That make it a bit slow in some points like at start when randomly generating the universe.

Concept & Game Mechanics

Nebula can be played one-on-one against computer or played up to five human players. The game screen is split into two maps of the galaxy with different data in each one. In each spot, planet or system the colors and characters display have a meaning. In the left hand map shows which race inhabits the planets and the colour of which player owns that system. Black symbols represents independent systems. The right hand map shows resource and military levels. Cyan represents a resource level of 3, green 2 and magenta 1. The numbers displays the army strenght in presence from 1 to 9. The player that owns that system will receive new force points based on resource levels after each turn.
